Background
Stephanie Michelle Breaux was born 11/04/1980 in West Monroe, Louisiana, to Randy Breaux and Lori Ann Carr. She had four siblings: brothers Justin and Dustin Breaux and sisters Meagan and Samantha Hill.
Stephanie enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve shortly after graduating from Huntington High School and later also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. She served three years in the Army and five years in the Air Force and completed two tours in Iraq, the most recent in 2006. During her military service, she trained as an Automated Logistical Specialist and earned several awards and decorations, including the Air Force Achievement Medal and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. She attained the rank of Senior Airman and was honorably discharged in 2006.
Stephanie attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe and later LSU-Shreveport, where she studied criminal justice. Law enforcement had a strong presence in her family. Her father was a retired Louisiana state trooper, while her paternal grandfather, Elton Breaux, retired from the Louisiana State Police with the rank of lieutenant. Stephanie had hoped to follow in their footsteps.
Her mother remembered Stephanie as funny, happy, independent, and always willing to take care of those around her. After returning from Iraq, Stephanie also faced difficulties readjusting to civilian life.
Stephanie was interred at Forest Church of God Cemetery in East Carroll Parish, LA.
Case Summary
On 03/04/2008, Stephanie was admitted to the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport. Three days later, on 03/07/2008 her grandmother, Chris Franklin, took her to the emergency room at LSU Health Sciences Center. After checking in, Stephanie told her grandmother she was going to the restroom and did not return. Franklin later said she contacted friends within law enforcement that day and that efforts were made to locate Stephanie, although a formal missing-person report was not filed.
Nearly a month later, on 04/03/2008, Shreveport police officers responding to reported drug activity at a vacant house in the 1200 block of Sprague Street in the Ledbetter Heights neighborhood discovered a badly decomposed body inside. The house was known to authorities for drug activity, and investigators estimated the body had been there for approximately two to four weeks. Stephanie was subsequently identified on 04/08/2008 through dental records and tattoos.
Police determined that Stephanie had been killed, but the cause of her death was not publicly disclosed. Investigators indicated that circumstances involving her body and the scene were inconsistent with suicide. They were unable to determine how Stephanie came to be at the Sprague Street house, including whether she went there voluntarily or was taken there. Authorities also did not disclose whether they believed she was killed inside the house or whether her body was brought there after her death.
In 06/2010, police reported receiving information concerning a possible suspect. No arrest was made, and the individual was not publicly identified.
On 04/08/2013, Caddo-Shreveport Crime Stoppers renewed its appeal for information in Stephanie’s case. Investigators indicated that they had developed substantial information but were still missing several pieces needed to make an arrest. Crime Stoppers offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of Stephanie’s killer, while electronic and static billboards displaying her photograph were placed throughout the area in an effort to generate additional leads.
Despite those efforts, no arrest has been publicly announced in Stephanie’s murder.
