Background
Vickie Lynn Badeaux was born 11/11/1964 in Raceland, Louisiana, to Mary Ann Martin. She had three siblings, Barry, Eric, and Raenell.
Vickie married Brent Orgeron and had two children, Seth and Brittany. She later married Roddy Toups and had two more children, Kajun and Hali.
Her family remembered a loving side of Vickie that existed apart from the difficulties she experienced later in life. Her mother described her as a nice person who tried hard to regain control of her life. Brittany remembered her as “such a happy person” and shared a handwritten letter from Vickie in which she expressed her love for her children and asked them to remember that love if anything ever happened to her.
Vickie struggled with drug addiction for a number of years. Her mother said the problem became increasingly severe during adulthood despite attempts to address it. In the months preceding her death, Vickie did not have a stable residence and stayed with friends in several communities. One of her last known addresses was 171 Autin Lane in Des Allemands. About two weeks before her death, she told family she was staying in Grand Isle and working on a trawler. They did not know how or why she later returned to Des Allemands.
She was interred at Holy Savior Church Cemetery in Lockport, Louisiana.
Case Summary
Vickie was last seen 10/11/2003 around 2:00 am walking along US Highway 90 in Boutte. She was wearing denim shorts and a white shirt.
At approximately 7:45 am, a passing motorist discovered her body in a water-filled ditch along LA Highway 635 in Des Allemands, between US Highway 90 and Old Spanish Trail. She was partially clothed and had no identification, although responding deputies recognized her. The condition of the scene indicated that she had likely been killed elsewhere and her body left along the roadside, possibly after being removed from a vehicle.
An autopsy determined she had been severely beaten. Her injuries included skull and facial fractures, a broken neck, and bruising to her abdomen, chest, and ribs. Investigators could not determine whether she had been struck with an object, beaten with fists, or attacked by more than one person. No evidence of sexual assault was found.
Investigators focused on identifying and interviewing everyone who had contact with her during the days preceding her death. Those considered possible suspects were given polygraph exams, but no arrest resulted.
They believed her addiction and practice of hitchhiking increased her vulnerability, as she frequently traveled throughout the West Bank area on foot and sought rides from others.
