Background
Mutrice Lesha Germany was born 10/28/1971, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was the only child of Shirley Germany and Ollie “Billy” Wimberly Jr.
He attended Woodlawn High School where he was a sophomore and member of the ROTC First Platoon-O’Neal Company in 1988.
Mutrice was married to Shantan Houston on 08/30/1991, and had three children: Shantrice, Xavier, and Kenny. He lived in Seattle, Washington for approximately three years before returning to Shreveport.
He was interred at Carver Memorial Cemetery in Shreveport, LA.
Case Summary
On the evening of 01/23/1994, Mutrice was riding with his friend, M.D. “Tony” Bankston, as they traveled westbound on I-20 from Bossier City toward Shreveport. During the drive they noticed another vehicle following them, repeatedly flashing its headlights.
Bankston pulled onto an exit ramp to determine what the other driver wanted, but the vehicle quickly backed away. Mutrice and Bankston continued into Shreveport and stopped near the intersection of Texas Ave and Murphy St, parking in front of Sun City Furniture. They got out and walked toward the corner to see if they were still being followed.
The vehicle approached and stopped nearby. Its unidentified driver fired twice, striking Mutrice once. The shooting occurred shortly after 6:00 pm, just feet from Shreveport Police headquarters. Officers nearby heard the gunfire and reached the scene almost immediately, but the shooter fled. Mutrice was transported to LSU Medical Center and died shortly afterward.
Physical evidence recovered during the investigation included a bullet that passed through Mutrice and struck a metal beam at the furniture store. The bullet was damaged beyond use for ballistics testing. Years later, detectives submitted evidence for DNA testing, but no match was obtained.
Bankston was the only known witness to the shooting but was unable to identify the gunman. He described the shooter as a black man with a low haircut. The suspect was driving a 1986 or 1987 burgundy Oldsmobile Cutlass with a burgundy vinyl top and chrome-type racing rims.
Investigators were unable to establish a motive. Police stated that Mutrice was not involved in drugs or gangs and was not considered a habitual offender.
