Background
Alicia “Allie” Rose Jeane Carver was born 09/09/1983 in Pineville, Louisiana, to Richard Jeane and Angela Cryer. She had one sibling, Kristal.
Allie spent most of her life in the Leesville area, where she attended Vernon Parish Optional School and was named to the eighth-grade honor roll in 1999. She later married Mark Carver. In early 09/2002, she was living in New Llano with her friend Barbara Ivey and Barbara’s family.
Her father remembered her as feisty, full of life, and happy-go-lucky, and he affectionately called her “Allie-cat.”
A memorial service was held on 09/15/2002, and a headstone was placed at Mitchell Cemetery in Anacoco. Her remains were cremated. According to Mark, the headstone incorrectly lists her surname as Cryer. She was never a Cryer; her maiden name was Jeane.
Case Summary
On the night of 09/11/2002, Barbara Ivey’s mother returned to the family’s home at 218 Lake Street in New Llano. There she found Allie and Barbara, 14, severely beaten in a bedroom.
New Llano Police responded and soon requested assistance from the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office (VPSO). Officers who worked the case later described the scene as one of the most brutal they’d encountered in Vernon Parish.
Just two days after her 19th birthday, Allie was pronounced dead at the scene by Richard Allen, Vernon Parish Coroner. She had extensive injuries to her face and skull. Her cause of death was determined to be blunt-force injuries from an unknown object or instrument.
Barbara, critically injured, was taken first to Byrd Regional Hospital and then transferred to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. She was briefly placed in protective custody. Although she recovered, she was unable to identify their attackers or to give an account of what happened.
An unnamed male family member was also in the home that night told investigators he had been asleep in a separate room and didn’t hear the attack. He said he woke only when his girlfriend, Barbara’s mother, came into the room screaming. He cooperated throughout the investigation.
Witnesses were interviewed, and physical and trace evidence was sent to a crime laboratory for examination. On 10/17/2002, Hilton said he was “pretty confident” they had already interviewed the person responsible. He did not name a suspect or a possible motive, and no arrest followed.
VPSO reopened the investigation on 09/11/2019, the 17th anniversary of Allie’s death. They reopened the case again on 04/01/2024, when Sheriff Sam Craft said advances in DNA testing gave renewed hope that evidence collected in 2002 could produce a break.
