Background
Kathy Marie Griffin was born on 11/11/1966 to Whitney and Mary Griffin. She had two sisters, Rakelya and Larisse, and three children: Katrina, Pretori and Taimiak.
In 03/1994, she returned to her hometown of Oakdale and lived with her mother at 502 E. Jackson Street. She was a member of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church. Her sister recalled that Kathy made friends easily, was a good person and devoted mother, and had a singing voice that others often complimented.
According to Rakelya, Kathy sometimes left home for several days at a time but would write to let her family know she was safe, although she’d rarely provide a return address.
Kathy was interred at Community Cemetery in Oakdale, Louisiana.
Case Summary
Kathy was last seen by her mother in 04/1994. Mary recalled that her daughter left one day saying she would return. Because of her drug use and association with people Mary considered a bad influence, she feared something had happened but continued hoping she would come home.
On 05/25/1995, skeletal remains were discovered at the “Old Folk’s Hunting Club,” also referred to as the “Old Hunter’s Club,” approximately 1.6 miles southwest of Plainview High School in Glenmora. Authorities did not know the woman’s identity and estimated that she had been dead between six months and two years. An autopsy determined that she died from severe blows to the head. Investigators could not determine whether she had been killed where her remains were found or whether her body had been moved there.
Initial attempts to identify the remains were unsuccessful, so authorities sought assistance from Clay Stewart of the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office. Stewart created a clay facial reconstruction, which was publicly unveiled on 07/19/1995.
After seeing the reconstruction, Mary recognized similarities to her missing daughter, particularly around the eyes. On 07/20/1995, she provided Detective Buddy Willis with a photograph of Kathy. Willis also noted similarities in the cheeks and eyes.
On 07/21/1995, Kathy’s identity was confirmed through dental records.
